A fire that broke out in Cherry Grove during the early morning hours on March 27 destroyed the two-story, 64-room Grove Hotel and the Holly House guesthouse, as well as the famed Kokomo home that offered unprecedented 360-degree views of Fire Island, the ocean, and the bay, and another private residence. A portion of the adjoining boardwalk also suffered damage.

The Ice Palace nightclub, adjacent to the hotel, escaped major damage.

Published reports indicated that officials are looking into electrical problems as a potential cause of the conflagration, in which three firefighters suffered minor injuries.
