GARTH FAGAN DANCE Garth Fagan’s dance company celebrates its 35th anniversary, at the Rose Theater, the home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Fagan’s landmark dance, “Griot New York,” created in 1991 in collaboration with Wynton Marsalis and sculptor Martin Puryear, will be given a one-night-only performance on Nov. 9, with music played live by the Wynton Marsalis Septet. The subject of a PBS “Great Performances: Dance in America,” which aired worldwide in 1995, “Griot New York” became an instant hit when it received its theatrical premiere as part of BAM’s Next Wave Festival in 1991. A glorious tapestry that synthesizes African traditions with contemporary American culture, the full-evening work is told from the point of view of a griot, or a storyteller who passes on the wisdom, traditions, and history of a society. Fagan’s choreography for “The Lion King” won him a 1998 Tony Award, the 1998 Drama Desk Award, 1998 Outer Critics Circle Award, 1998 Astaire Award, 2000 Laurence Olivier Award, and 2001 Ovation Award. 33 W. 60th St. at Broadway. The opening night performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Performances continue through Nov. 13, Thu.-Sat. 8 p.m., and Sat. & Sun. 2 p.m. Opening night tickets are $45-$150; otherwise $45-$65 at the box office, jalc.org, or 212-721-6500.
