By: ANDY HUMM | Now that Jim Kolbe of Arizona, the only out gay Republican House member, has left Congress, he is letting loose on his party's opposition to same-sex marriage, a woman's right to choose, and embryonic stem cell research, bemoaning the right-wing social conservatives who control the GOP.
But in his interview with the Arizona Daily Star, Kolbe defended his vote for the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act that banned federal recognition of same-sex marriages and gave the states the right not to recognize legal same-sex marriages performed in other states. He said, “I could make a very good argument that marriage belongs in the hands of the state.
I don't think that should be changed.”
