In Iraq
The following members of the United States Armed Forces died during the past week in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Since the inception of hostilities, 2,508 service members have died, 2,364 of them since President George W. Bush declared an end to major combat operations on May 1, 2003. Thus far 18,572 service members have been wounded in action.

The Department of Defense identified two soldiers believed to have been captured by insurgent forces at a Baghdad checkpoint. Despite widespread reports that the two mutilated bodies found in Iraq on Tuesday are those of these two servicemen, as of press time, the Defense Department had not announced results of definitive DNA testing.
